The castle of Amaiur stood as the last resistance of the Kingdom of Navarre against Castilian conquerors. In 1522, a battalion of less than two hundred men fought for a week against the troop siege of thousand warriors commanded by the Count of Miranda. After the defeat, the castle was torn down leaving nothing behind.
For the last decades Aranzadi Science Society has worked in archaeological excavations to bring back Amaiur’s memory to life. Between the many objects found are many international coins, ceramic pieces & a sword.
To celebrate the 500 hundred annivesary of the battle I was asked to create an illustration. After visiting the museum of Amaiur, and researching about it, I decided to make a composition with all the iconography surrounding this special place of our history.
